Faculty Member, Biological Sciences
Lecturer in Molecular Exercise Physiology
About
I am a UK-born, Oxford-educated researcher and lecturer, who holds qualifications in both physiology and mathematics. Before becoming a scientist, I was a well-known musician. I have written regularly (on human physiology and exercise science) for a number of UK magazines, and once had a radio show in Yugoslavia.
My research interests focus on human systems biology and striated muscle plasticity. I am particularly interested in using novel and unusual methods (including magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), bioengineering, mass spectrometry and mathematical modelling) to study how diet, environment and exercise affect muscle metabolism and function. I am also a member of the Xtreme Everest Research Group, an international team of researchers who use high-altitude ascents to understand how healthy humans adapt to low-oxygen environments.
